My wife, Lisa, is a die hard Tour de France fan. Our local video shop gets no business during the month of July; it's all about the Tour every night in July (we watch it live thanks to Tivo). This year's shenanigans involving strength enhancing drugs, blood doping, non reporting of whereabouts and other scandals has dimmed her enthusiasm some, but she still controls the remote and it's still set on the Versus channel every night, all night!
But there is one event in July that can tear my wife away from the scrawny bikers peddling to Paris, Floyd Fest! The picture shows me on stage last year with Rory Block and Ron Tuffel. I perform there again this year and as always will have the family in tow. I love performing there, but I'm thankful my sets get done early so I can take in the festival as a fan. Cajun, Celtic, World, Funk, Old Time, Bluegrass, Blues and more are all on display and every year I find a pleasant musical surprise I heretofore did not know existed. What's more, FloydFest is like a big Floyd County block party. My kids roam free and safely along with the rest of the feral youth. I know that there are too many familiar eyes noting their whereabouts and activities for them to get into any trouble. My wife and I catch up with friends and neighbors we haven't seen in awhile and we always meet great new friends.
Check out http://www.floydfest.com/2007/ and make plans to join us! The yard work can wait and if your glued to the tube watching the race, Tivo it and catch some great music performed by world class musicians. If you see us there say hello, but please don't ask my Lisa about Floyd Landis!
